About Nu'ta Films
Located in the centre of Cairo, Nu’ta Films is a production company dedicated to producing artistic and experimental films. We strive to support film makers from the region in all stages of production with script consultation, production design, location scouting, talent casting, art direction and in-house editing, sound design and mix facilities.
The Team
Hala Elkoussy
Co-founder of Nu'ta Films, Hala Elkoussy is a visual artist who works across a variety of media: photography, video, installation, sculpture. She has produced a number of short films that were screened in exhibitions and film festivals around the world among which the Istanbul Biennial, Tate Modern, Centre Georges Pompidou. Her artwork features in the collections of Tate Modern, StedelijkMuseum Amsterdam, Jameel Collection among others.
She obtained her BA from the American University in Cairo and her MA from Goldsmith College, University of London. In 2004, she co-founded Cairo Image Collective, the first space dedicated to the image in the Region. In 2006, she completed a two-year Residency at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten.
In 2010, she received the Abraaj Capital Prize. In 2014, she set up Fotomasr, an archive of photographs from Egypt from the 19thCentury to the 1970s.
Cactus Flower her first feature film participated at FabriqueCinemas Du Monde and went on to premiere in International Film Festival Rotterdam. It received Best Actress Award at the Dubai International Film Festival and Special Jury Award in Aswan International Women’s Film Festival. It is currently screening on Netflix. In 2020, Elkoussy chaired the board of De Appel Amsterdam. Her second feature film East of Noon premiered in Directors’ Fortnight – Cannes 2024.
Abdelsalam Moussa
Co-founder of Nu'ta Films, Abdelsalam Moussa is a cinematographer and producer. Hailed as a rising star by American Cinematographer in 2020, AbdelSalam Moussa is the DOP and co-producer of East of Noon. Hailing from a family with an illustrious cinematic history, Moussa has gone on to carve a place on the regional scene with ten cinematography prizes to his name. He worked in several films and TV series: Harag we Marag by Nadine Khan, Muga Haara and Afraah El Quba, by Mohamed Yassin, Bashteri Ragil by Mohamed Aly, Walad we Bint and Musawer Qatil by Karim El Adl, Iyar Naari by Karim El Shenawy. He collaborated with Hala Elkoussy on three short films which screened in international festivals and art biennials and two music videos which aired on national TV.
Moussa is an ardent experimenter. East of Noon is his fourth production shot on film.
Abdalrahman Mahmoud
Sound designer and director Abdalrahman Mahmoud is a long term collaborator with Nu'ta Films. He runs the in-house sound facilities.
Mahmoud is a graduate of Egypt’s Higher Cinema Institute, where he earned his degree with highest honours in 2007. With a multifaceted career in film, he has worked as a sound recorder, sound designer, producer, and post-production supervisor.
conducted several workshops specializing in sound design, sharing his expertise with aspiring filmmakers. He sound-designed prize winning films that have been selected for international festivals, including the Abu Dhabi Film Festival, Dubai Film Festival, IDFA, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Tetouan Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, and the Cannes Film Festival .
As a sound designer, Mahmoud earned the National Festival of Cinema Award in 2014 and the Critics’ Prize in 2015. In 2024, he was also recognized with the Specialized Award for Technical Excellence at the Kerala International Film Festival for his work on East of Noon, directed by Hala ElKoussy.
Expanding his creative pursuits into directing, Mahmoud was awarded Best Director and Best Editor for his short documentary Door to the Worldin 2022.
